Ping-Pong Pistol
This device is similar in principle to the spud gun but it is much smaller, easier to build, and less powerful. You don't need any special tools and the materials are very common so you should be able to build one of these in a few minutes for only a couple of dollars.

how-to
- Use a short piece of duct tape to seal one end of an empty paper towel tube.
- Cut a hole in the duct tape just large enough for the tip of the utility lighter to fit through.
- Release a quick spurt of hair spray into the open end of the tube. You will have to experiment to find the best amount — there must be enough oxygen in the tube for combustion. Only aerosol hair sprays will work (the type in a metal canister).
- Insert the ping-pong ball 1/3 of the way into the tube and then insert the tip of the lighter through the duct tape.
- Spark the lighter. The piezo igniter will ignite the propellants and the resulting pressure will quickly accelerate the ball out of the tube.

Most aerosols should work. Just check the label and make sure it has a flammability warning.
You shouldn’t have to activate the lighter long enough to catch the tube on fire. When you have the right mixture of air and propellant it should just “pop” when you flick the lighter. Try experimenting with different amounts of propellant.

Various cleaners may work, just look for a warning on the back that says it’s flammable. I wouldn’t use bug spray though, that stuff is usually pretty toxic.

The third one i have just made is a wrapping paper tube, with a pin stuck about 1/4 of the way down (for the ball to rest against) this works brilliantly as you can put the ball in before you spray the stuff in. my best distance with this is probably over 20+ metres, quite lethal close range :P.
I plan to add a milk carton to the back of it to have a nice big combustion chamber, should go eeeeeeeeven further!

The igniter gets wet and doesn’t work. I had this problem when I made a potato cannon a few years ago. If you can make it to where the igniter can be taken out of the barrel to dry it off manually, it should work more consistently .

ok people, I have spent the better part of a week perfecting this into a rape-cannon capable of firing a bit of wood about 40 meters, it is basically the same as the above design but with a larger combustion chamber and a more sturdy design.
What you need:
~2 liter plastic bottle (not milk, the thicker the better, juice bottles work well)
~A roll or two of electrical tape (thick plasticy black tape that sticks well to itself)
~Cardboard tube (should be about 20-30cm long)
~Utility lighter
~Propellant (any klind of flammable aerosol will work)
~Knife or other sharp thing (scissors)
Method.
1. strip bottle of all plastic bits around the cap area and place the cardboard tube over it.
2. Tightly tape it into place with electrical tape, making sure not to leave any gaps for pressure to escape through.
3. Using a knife or something sharp cut a hole in the bottom of the plastic bottle big enough for the utility lighter to slide in (try to shape it so that when you place the lighter into the hole it makes a good seal)
4. Find a stick a little smaller than the barrel and circular and cut it so that its about 10cm long
5. Wrap electrical tape around the stick about 2-3cm from one end so that when pushed into the barrel it will form a tight seal (when you put the bullet in the barrel it shouldn’t be able to slide by itself but it should be easy to move with a stick or something)
and you’re ready to fire, there are some problems ive noticed so to counter these here is a good way to fire.
1. Load bullet into barrel and push to the end, it should stop when it hits the entrance to the bottle.
2. Spray propellant into bottle through the hole in the bottom.
3. Insert lighter
4. aim
5. Fire
There are also a things that might help you.
~if you arnt getting the distance or power then it could be one of a few things.
1. “dimpling”, this can occur if your bottle dimples inwards, The pressure from the propellant pushes out the dimples and goes to waste when you fire, to fix this just squeeze down on the center of the dimple when you fire.
2. Overheating, this can occur after a few shots. The bottle heats up quite a bit and for some reason stops working, Just rest it ontop of a body of water and flip it over every minute until its cool.
3. a hole in the bottle. To find out if there is a leak put your finger in the lighter-hole and then blow into the barrel and listen for air escaping. To stop this just wrap the whole thing in electrical tape, it stops the leak and makes it look cool. :D
4. Too much propellant. If you put too much in then there will be no oxygen for the lighter to do its thing, so if you light the lighter just outside the lighter-hole (pointing both holes away from you) it should burn off, or you can just blow in the chamber to expel it through the lighter-hole, but be careful that there is no flame (it can happen and it doesn’t feel very good.
5. projectile too big. The projectile is too big for the barrrel, just take some tape off and you’ll be right.
and thats about it…
Just a note, this thing is loud as fuck (shotgun loud) so I advise not to do it inside.
Oh yeah, this thing could seriously hurt someone so dont shoot someone pointblank or anything (i’d give them at least 7 meters)
I’m devising a system that allows it to fire the Film canister vinegar bombs from the front page, I’ll let you all know how it goes once its done.

BTW, I suggest to those how have asked NOT TO USE A MATCH, Firstly because the lighter SPARKS and does not CATCH FIRE, therefore it only ignites the propellant. Secondly, because you need to light the match manually and not remotely like the lighter, so it would be impossible to stick the lighted match inside the combustion chamber fast enough. Since my ‘fire’ usage is restricted and I can’t use a lighter either, I’m going to try putting two wires VERY CLOSE TOGETHER and see if running a current through them will create a spark. Please can someone try this to see if they can get a spark off this, because my resources are extremely limited and I probably will not get even TWO WIRES. Thanks, and please comment soon.
