Burning Bubbles

This project allows you to create soap bubbles that are filled with flamable gas. You can then transfer the bubbles to any surface you wish and light them on fire. The bubbles burn very quickly, creating an impressive fire ball but generally not igniting the surface they are placed on.

tools

materials

  • A. Small container with water
  • B. Cheap cigarette lighter
  • C. Matches
  • D. Dish soap

how-to

  1. Add a few squirts of liquid soap to the dish of water. Gently stir the water until the soap disolves but try not to create bubbles yet.
  2. Submerge the lighter in the water and hold down the button that releases the butane. Butane-filled bubbles will slowly begin to accumulate on the surface of the water. To speed things up, you can use a butane refill canister.
  3. Using a match, carefully light the bubbles. You should do this outside in a clear area.

You can also modify the lighter by taking the metal off and lifting the flame height adjuster off of the gear it turns. Facing the front of the lighter (where the flame is) turn the gear to the right, then lift off to go back to the left, then place back on the gear. Repeat as necessary. That speeds up the escape of gas from the lighter.

If you really want fun bubbles you might try the following, but I wouldn’t recommend it :-)

take jam jar outside in a safe area in bright sunlight - it wont work indoors. Add one half teaspoon of potassium chlorate into the jar (this is nasty dangerous stuff - be carfeul !). Take a piece of thin paper and stuff this into the jar to form a well. This is your ‘fuse’

Now pour in a quantity of concentrated suplphuric acid (this is unbeleivably dangerous stuff - dont go near it unless you know what you are doing!).

Retire quickly to a safe distance at least 6 ft. Wait.

After a while the paper will burn through due to the acids oxidising properties. When the acid reaches the cholrate it is oxidised into perchloric acid and chlorine dioxide. Chlorine dioxide is an orange gass that is unstable and explosively decomposes on exposure to ultraviolet light.

So the result is small orange puffs of chlorine dioxide that rise a little and then go ‘pop’. Very nice. DONT even think about doing this in large quantities and be careful to heavily dilute and then neutralise the by products with a weak alkali.

In fact his is definately in the Dont do it catagory!

Another dangerous tip is the can flamethrower, place your lighter in front of it and spray the flammable liquid onto the open flame, bear in mind: there could be some fire sucked back in to the can and cause a violent explosion…but it has never happenned to be…use small bursts

Adding a balloon with some flammable gas liquid or other on top of the bubbles is also good fun

you can take a regular 5 gallon bucket and put a hose connected to a tank of methane. Inside the bucket put half a gallon of water and a whole bottle of dish soap. turn the methane tank on and let the bubbles grow.Because of the methane the bubbles will stay in a bubble column and I have gotten it to about 15 feet of floating bubbles. But be careful when you light it because it goes up pretty fast.

Going off on a tangent, you can take a (pref. empty) fast food drink cup, remove the straw and fill the cup with a butane lighter through the lid. Light the straw on fire then place over the hole. Not exactly safe but not dangerous either (aside from the obvious playing with fire and burning drops of plastic from the straw) Makes a relatively loud pop but doesn’t hurt the cup.

Another thing that you may be able to do with this is get a gallon or so of gas, a bubble gun or wand, and a lighter.(Make sure that you can put a lid or something on the gas to block the fumes.) This first one may not work if it’s windy .
variation 1. put a small amount of gas in the bubble soap stuff. turn on the lighter and blow the bubbles. they should be allover the place on fire.
variation 2. take the cap off of the gas. then blow out the bubbles. light the lighter and you should get the same effect.
I haven’t tested these so they may not work. Please someone post if it does.

Another cool way to make fire bubbles is:
get a canister of propane (the camping kind) and put a hose on the threaded outlet. fill a container up with dish soap. turn the propane bottle on until it is barely coming out. put the other end of the hose (the one thats not attached to the bottle) in the liquid soap. when a bubble starts to form, gently raise the hose out of the soap with the growing bubble still attached. pull the hose out of the bubble so the bubble is just floating in the air. (a lot of times the bubble pops at this point. just keep trying.) while the bubble is FLOATING FREELY IN THE AIR, AND NOT ATTACHED TO YOUR PROPANE HOSE (this creates a flame thrower), light the bubble from underneath. you can even do it inside like i did because the gas (propane, mapp gas, etc.) is the only thing burning. it would be pretty hard to ignite your ceiling. (but not impossible, remember that.) Hint: the bigger the bubble, the bigger the fireball.

A better thing than what I said before:
Fill a bubble gun with 2/3 bubble soap, 1/3 butane/gas/methane
Take a lighter, light it, and tape down the little lever thing
Tape the flaming lighter by the base of the gun where the bubbles will come out (Careful, not tested and may make the inner container blow up rofl)
Blow the little flaming bubbles in short bursts
Trick your younger siblings/ neighbors that this gun was commercially produced (some assembly required)

if u wanna do something fun go to a gun shop and buy salt peter and mix it with a 2:3 ratio with baking soda in a disposable metal pan then let freeze for 1.5 days and then use anything to make a fuse like paper then light the fuse and run like giant burning peices of gunpowder-like substance is behind you(: pretty amazing but the smoke it produces easily fills a entire street with smoke so smoke alarms would go off. <—– really long sentence. do it in a far off field or in the bathroom, i dont care

Hey “partyintummy”..KN03 and baking soda won’t do shlt you dumbas$. Instead mix it with sugar and it will act as a fuel. much better flame and smoke. BTW gun shops DON’T sell KN03.
